Our history
ExxonMobil was the first oil and gas company to set up operations in Brazil. We arrived in the country on January 17, 1912, under the name of Standard Oil Company of Brazil, and since then we have kept uninterrupted activities in the country.
As part of our legacy, we have the Esso brand and the Tiger mascot in the gas stations. Also important to mention is The Reporter Esso radio cast and TV news show, which subsequently gave birth to the Esso Journalism Award, one of the most prestigious awards in the history of Brazilian journalism for six decades.

ExxonMobil's History in Brazil
ExxonMobil was authorized to set up operations in Brazil by a Decree issued by President Hermes da Fonseca, signed on January 17, 1912, under the name Standard Oil Company of Brazil. We were pioneers in the distribution of oil products, such as gasoline and kerosene, sold in drums and cans.
Our company has more than century-long history in Brazil with several other pioneering initiatives, such as the installation of the first gas pumps on public roads; the construction of the first tanker car and the country's first tanker truck; the fueling of the first aircrafts for Brazilian commercial aviation; the institution of the news bulletin that has become the standard in Brazil, the “Reporter Esso”; the creation of the Esso Journalism Award - later known as the ExxonMobil Journalism Award, for six decades.
We pioneered in the implementation of a single Order Service Center, in the launching of Maxxi Álcool and EssoMaxxi Gold, the first alcohol additive and premium gasoline in the country, respectively. We were also the first to include in the market a complete international line of lubricants, with Mobil 1 and Esso Ultron synthetic oils, the most advanced lubricants in the world, among other milestones.
In 1999, two major oil companies, Exxon and Mobil merged, resulting in the Exxon Mobil Corporation, bringing together the best human and technological resources.
In 1999, we installed our Global Business Center (GBC) in Curitiba. The GBC plays a crucial role in the company's local and global businesses, providing services such as Information Technology, Accounting, Finance and Customer Service and Support to more than 70 countries. We are also located in São Paulo, with a Product Solutions office, where we operates in several businesses and in strategic sectors of the Brazilian economy, offering a range of different products with applications in the paint, adhesives, pharmaceutical and agricultural products, among others.
In recent years, we have participated in the public bidding processes conducted by the National Agency of Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANP) and acquired offshore exploration blocks in Brazil. Currently, we have participation in 17 blocks in the Campos, Santos and Sergipe-Alagoas sedimentary basins in partnership with Petrobras, Equinor, Galp, Qatar Energy, Enauta, Murphy and PPSA. Of the 17 blocks, we are operators of 14. ExxonMobil has also participation in the Bacalhau field, operated by Equinor, in partnership with Galp and PPSA.
